The Straight Answer
Indoor air quality here is a humidity problem before it is a dust problem. Because air conditioning runs nearly year-round, indoor air passes continuously through the HVAC system — and where moisture accumulates, coils and air handlers become the place microbial growth starts and the ductwork distributes it.
There is a trap worth knowing about. Fitting high-efficiency filtration or purification equipment without evaluating airflow first raises static pressure, which reduces cooling performance and can leave you with cleaner air and a worse-performing system. A denser filter is not automatically a better filter. IAQ equipment has to be specified against the airflow the system actually has, which is why we measure before recommending.
What You Notice First
A musty or mold-like smell when the system runs points to microbial growth inside coils or the air handler — the ductwork is then distributing it through the building.
Persistent dust buildup after regular cleaning usually means filtration is not matched to the building, or particles are bypassing the filter entirely.
Excess indoor humidity that the air conditioner never quite removes. Cooling and dehumidifying are related but not the same job, and one can happen without the other.

Improving indoor air usually takes more than one device. Filtration, purification, moisture control, and ventilation each solve a different part of the problem.

Whether the filtration you want is compatible with the airflow your system has. This is the check most often skipped, and the reason IAQ upgrades disappoint.
Indoor humidity levels measured and the building's moisture load assessed, because sizing dehumidification is a calculation rather than a preference.
Condition inspected directly. If growth has already established on a damp coil, purification treats the cause rather than masking the smell.
Air distribution checked, since equipment that cleans air still cannot deliver it to rooms the ductwork underserves.
Whether the building needs controlled fresh air, which tightly sealed modern construction frequently does and rarely has.

Sometimes, and sometimes it makes things worse. A denser high-efficiency filter restricts airflow, and fitting one without checking your system's static pressure can reduce cooling performance and strain the blower. Filtration has to be matched to the airflow the system actually has. It also does nothing for humidity, which in Florida is usually the larger half of the problem.
Because something is growing where moisture collects — typically the evaporator coil or inside the air handler, both of which stay damp in Florida humidity. The system then distributes that air through the ductwork, which is why the smell arrives with the airflow. UV coil purification treats the surface where it starts, rather than masking the odour downstream.
It does, as a by-product of cooling — but only while it runs. A system that satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off has not run long enough to remove much moisture, and an oversized one does this constantly. Where humidity stays high despite adequate cooling, a whole-home dehumidifier handles moisture independently of the thermostat.
It targets microbial growth that filters are not designed to capture. There are two placements and they do different jobs: coil purification treats the damp coil surface where growth establishes, while air purification treats air moving through the system. Which one suits a property depends on whether the problem is at the source or in circulation.
Often, yes — and it is counterintuitive. Newer construction is tightly sealed for efficiency, which is good for energy bills but leaves no controlled path for fresh air, so indoor air goes stale and moisture accumulates. Energy recovery ventilation introduces outdoor air deliberately while limiting the energy penalty of doing so.
Badly specified equipment can. Adding restrictive filtration or purification without evaluating airflow raises static pressure, which reduces cooling capacity, hurts humidity removal, and shortens blower life.
