The compressor is the most expensive component in your system, so before anyone replaces one it should be proven failed — and the reason it failed should be found too, or the new one inherits the same problem.
The Straight Answer
The compressor circulates refrigerant and drives the whole cooling process, so when it fails the system cannot cool no matter where you set the thermostat. But compressor symptoms overlap heavily with cheaper faults — a failed capacitor or contactor produces similar complaints for a fraction of the cost. Diagnostic testing to confirm the compressor has actually failed is the first thing that should happen.
