Advisory – Heating Problems May be Caused by Utility Company Devices

FPL and many power companies have a program to save you money on your electric bill. In the case of FPL, the program is called “On-Call”. The program is designed to help FPL meet high demand for electricity during periods of peak usage that may occur during extreme weather. In exchange for a credit on your electric bill the utility company installs devices on equipment in your home or business that will allow the utility company to  turn that equipment off for varying periods of time during high demand periods. If one of these devices is installed on your heating and air conditioning system it can interrupt the heating or cooling of your home and may cause intermittent problems in the functioning of your thermostat. Normally, after the equipment is turned back on by the installed device, everything returns to proper functionality.

The program, as described above, and the temporary outages it causes are not the responsibility of Total Comfort to remedy at no charge. Total Comfort or other similar organizations are not allowed to modify the functioning of these devices without the permission of the utility company. Any service calls performed by Total Comfort under these circumstances will incur a service call fee.

If you are enrolled in FPL’s program or a similar program we suggest you check the terms of your agreement and determine if it’s the right solution for you.

The FPL webpage that describes the program and some of the terms is located at https://www.fpl.com/save/programs/on-call.html

Total Comfort-After Irma

Total Comfort has been back to work since Tuesday the 12th, however, conditions have had a definite impact on things.

Total Comfort relies heavily on the internet and phone communications. We had no internet service at our main office until Saturday morning and phone service was restored last Thursday. Dispatchers are operating from our smaller office in Holly Hill. Because of the disruption in services we have a tremendous backlog of various requests for service and are trying to get to them as quickly as possible. We appreciate the patience shown by our customers and want everyone to know that we are trying to take care of all calls in the most expeditious manner possible.

This picture of our dispatch area to the right doesn’t really show the water all over everything, the missing skylight, and the shingles that were strewn all over the room. The cause of all of this was the tornado that took out 1/2 of a gable roof end and several sheets of plywood and shingles. The roof of the propane dispensing station at 400 North U.S. 1 was removed by the storm that also knocked down a tree that destroyed the cargo container on one of our vehicles.

All in all, it’s been a rough week for us as well as our customers. We are behind because of the tremendous demand but we are trying very hard to catch up. As of this morning we have everyone back at 400 North U.S. 1 and we’re making progress. We do appreciate everyone’s patience and want everyone to know we are doing all we can to take care of our customers.
