T8 and T12There are more reasons for #changing your #fluorescent lamps than the fact that one has burned out or that a portion of them have turned dark at the ends.  Older type #T12 lamps (1 ½” diameter) degrade over the life of the lamp.  Lamps one year old may be only producing 60% to 70% of the lighting it produced when it was new.  It still uses the same amount of power it used when new but  the lumen output has decreased and can continue to decrease until you get one half of the original output. 

Newer #T8 lamps (1” diameter) are far superior.  They degrade over their life but never go below an 80% output.  There are other reasons that make the change more enjoyable.  #T8 lamps utilize electronic ballasts that use less power than older magnetic transformers.  They are quieter, add less heat to a room, and come on with less delay.  

#T8 lamps use phosphors to coat the inside of the lamps and produce light with a higher color rendering index, which means it shows colors closer to the way they should be seen.  They also offer several color temperatures to choose from.  The number printed on the end of the lamp describes it.  For example, in the identification number F32T8/841; F means it is a fluorescent lamp, 32 is the wattage, the 8 indicates the lamp color rendering index of 80% or more, and 41 is the color temperature of 4100 Kelvin, which is commonly used in office lighting or retail spaces (cool white).  The lower the last two numbers the warmer the color temperature and the higher the last two numbers the cooler the color temperature.  Daylight colored lamps are in the 6000+ Kelvin temperature range while incandescent lamps have a warmer look and a color temperature of 2600 Kelvin. 

With all of these benefits you can see it just may be time to change out those old #T12 lamps real soon.
